Product Description
In the Middle Ages, big blocks of gentle soap were first crafted in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille with olive oil from local groves, marine ash and sea salted water. The quality of these soaps were immediately famous throughout Europe and in 1688 French law declared that only soaps made according to certain ancient methods could bear the important mark Savon de Marseille. Now the most prized of all soaps in the world, our Savon de Marseille is still crafted by hand, in Marseille, just as it has been for hundreds of years. It takes the Maitre de Savon (soapmaster) two weeks to make Marseille Soap. The purest ingredients (mentioned above) are heated for ten days in antique cauldrons. Know-how passed down through the generations will reveal to the soapmaster the right moment to pour the mixture into open pits where it slowly hardens. Cut into cubes and stamped, without machines of any kind, the soaps are then set out to dry in the sun and cool winds. Savon de Marseille (also known as "Marseille Soap") is once again being rediscovered for its extraordinary purity, gentle skin care and ecological value. Savon de Marseille is recommended by dermatologists throughout the world for dry or sensitive skin, eczema and other ailments. In France it has been trusted for generations to cleanse everything from linens to little faces. Marseille Soap is totally biodegradable, requires little packaging and its manufacture is environmentally friendly. Authentic Marseille Soap is stamped with its weight in grams - a practice left over from years ago which allowed households to compare prices and plan their inventories. No soap is "greener." In France they are sold piled high on open-air market tables like produce, wrapped in craft paper. Your Savon de Marseille will be delivered without plastic packaging, carefully wrapped in paper stamped with the famous marks to prove its authenticity. © French Soaps LTD

My entire family is addicted to this olive oil soap, from senoirs to teens, everyone comes out of the bath thanking me that they feel so smooth. Great for anyone with dry skin in summer or winter. I have even tried lathering it with a shaving brush the old fashioned way and it works. You'll wish you bought more.

5 out of 5 stars I am in love   October 11, 2009

I love the olive oil Savon de Marseille. I use it for everything. There is no waste, a tiny bit cleans the counter or washes my hands. I feel like with liquid soap I am pouring out so much more than is necessary but not so with this. The texture is silky and solid at the same time. I am shocked at how well it cleans and how good I feel about using it. Though it lasts incredibly long, I am a bit of a miser with it, I am afraid. I am terrified of one day running out. Perhaps I should order a few extra bars just in case, though I've had my original cube for at least three months. My hands aren't destroyed after washing-up. I can clean a paintbrush with it beautifully. It is my absolute favorite cleaning product and I had no intention of ever having a favorite cleaning product. I recommend the olive oil Savon de Marseille highly. (I think we should go on a field trip to Marseille to get more, don't you?)

5 out of 5 stars glorious soap   July 8, 2009

Savon de Marseille is an elegant soap that leaves you clean, without residue and does not overpower with the stench of heavy perfume that cheaper soaps leave behind. Contains real crushed flowers. Light and clean.

This soap is amazing! I bought this soap in the 1000 gram block size, and I cut it up so it's easier to use. Normally when I use body wash, it leaves my skin soft, but feels greasy and heavy after I shower. With this soap, my skin is soft and also natural feeling. It smells wonderful: it's light and refreshing. I don't even have to apply lotion after I shower with this!

What Happens When I Get the Blue Veins Removed From My Legs

These are my legs in a self-portrait taken on my recent vacation to Tulum, Mexico. I have worked with David Edwards, my personal trainer at the Rockefeller Center New York Sports Club twice a week for more than two years so I feel I've earned these legs and from the front they look great, but f...

Help! How Do I Pick the Right Foundation?

I remember my drugstore beauty days when I stood in the drugstore aisle trying to figure out my best foundation bet by holding up the bottle to my face. I inevitably picked the wrong shade and walked around with the telltale line at the jaw. These days, we're lucky most department and drugstore...

How Much Skincare is Too Much?

Every night I use Pond's cold cream to cleanse my skin. I follow the cleansing with moisturizer before applying eye cream and Retin-A. As you may know by now, I'm convinced Retin-A will be my secret to looking 60 when I'm really 70. Once every couple weeks I may treat myself to a microdermabrasi...

Rancho La Puerta's Famous Guacamole Recipe (Made With Peas!)

Last week I wrote about my stay at Rancho La Puerta spa in Baja, Mexico, where I exercised all week, got massages and facials and fell in love with a healthy guacamole recipe made with avocados and peas.

People wrote to me asking for more information, so I called up the Ranch's corporate offices...

How to Cover Up Acne Scars

I recently got a heartbreaking email from a young woman about to go off to college and struggling with acne scars. The scars, she wrote, have been a huge blow to the self-confidence she once had. She wanted to know if I had any makeup tricks for covering up the scars and she was worried that her ...

Lemon Hair Spray

This is simple, but it works well. It also adds body to fine, limp hair, and it gives light hair added shine.

2 lemons, sliced
2 cups hot water

Place lemon slices and water in a glass or enamel pan and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until the water is reduced to 1 cup - about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Line a strainer with cheesecloth and strain the mixture. Squeeze the cloth out thoroughly to get all the juice. Pour the strained mixture into a pump-type container. Mixture will keep for 1 to 2 months in the refrigerator.
